You can decide to listen and do nothing, or listen and act on it. This is what I refer to as listening carefully.
I will mostly dwell on the convictions or intuitions we get. Sometimes we listen and doubt. One major question is who or what causes these heart convictions? Or what are they? Are they really dependable? Can we trust them?
I heard once that a conviction is when GOD pricks your heart through the Holy Spirit. This is because after Jesus ascended GOD gave us the Holy Spirit to guide us. Also the Holy Spirit communicates to us through our spirit man, as we are all made up of the body, spirit and soul.
1st Corinthians 2:9-11 – But as it is written: “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love Him”. But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God. For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God.
Many are the times we do not know what to do or in which way our life is to be progressing. Who do we ask for directions? Who do we trust to get answers from? Who do we listen to? I believe we get convictions according to our beliefs.
Romans 10:17 – So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
I will give you a recent and true experience I had. It was during the Plug In retreat we had as a group (a Bible Study group). Our group is called LIFE (Living In Faith Everyday). On this retreat we were to meet with other small groups, who had also gone through the 10 weeks of Bible Study with a book called Mizizi. On the last day of the 3-day retreat there was a memory verse competition.
Our group had chosen four of the best members, as per the thorough tests we had to undertake each week. We thank GOD for the facilitators who gave us the tests as we would have had another story to tell. I was chosen among them. On that Sunday, each group was requested to only have 2 representatives. In a bid to make sure our group wins, our two gentlemen stepped down for Michelle and I.
I certainly felt the pressure to perform and not let down our group members and facilitators. Michelle and I encouraged each other that we had practised through and through, had great speed and we even remembered where to place our commas and semicolons. Funny, isn’t it?
Everything was examined, even the speech marks! We had 10 specific memory verses to be written in 10 minutes!
We were guided to the examination room alongside other examinees. I had a flashback of K.C.S.E (Kenya Cerificate of Secondary Education). The sweaty palms, palpitating hearts, and the silent room with the stern invigilator.
Once I heard “Start,” I wasted no time. I wrote the first memory verse, 1st John 5:11-12, with all its punctuation marks. As I went onto the second verse, I heard a silent but strong conviction to read the first verse. Remember that I had no time for errors or second guessing. Should I listen to this conviction? Should I trust it?
I decided to read it. I read it twice, and was glad that I did!
The Holy Spirit had definitely pricked my spirit, and I had listened! I thank GOD that I listened carefully and obeyed. I had written the first verse wrongly.
With instant decisiveness, I tore the paper and began the test afresh. I had confidence in the fact that I had done this test before within 8 minutes, hence granting me the time to check for errors.
After the marking of the tests, the results were ready to be announced. Thankfully, our LIFE group won with a perfect score! Both Michelle and I had a score of 100! This is what I believe was the fruit for listening to the Spirit of GOD.
My Say therefore is, listen and listen carefully when your spirit is convicted to act on something.

As you read or listen to God’s Word and spend time talking to Him in prayer, your spirit will eventually become stronger than your flesh. ~Joyce Meyer
